What happens in a Reiki session? A first-timer's guide

A healer's hands hovering gently above a person's open palms in warm golden light

Almost everyone who books a first Reiki session asks the same quiet question at the end of the call: "…and what exactly will happen?" It is a fair question. Energy healing can sound mysterious from the outside, and nobody enjoys walking into an hour they cannot picture. So here is the whole session, from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave — with nothing left vague.

It begins with a conversation, not a table

The first ten minutes are simply talk. You share what brings you — stress that will not lift, poor sleep, a heaviness you cannot name, or simple curiosity. There is no form to fill and no "right answer." From this we set a gentle intention for the session: what you would like to release, or what you would like more of.

If we are meeting online, this part is exactly the same — a relaxed call before the healing begins.

During the session: you rest, that's all

You lie down fully clothed — comfortable clothes are all you need — on a soft table, or sit in a chair if that is easier for your body. Eyes closed, if you like. My hands rest lightly on or hover just above different points: head, shoulders, heart, stomach, knees, feet. There is no massage, no pressure, no manipulation.

What do people actually feel? The honest answer: it varies, and all of it is normal.

  • Warmth under the hands, sometimes surprisingly strong
  • Tingling or a gentle pulsing in the body
  • Emotions surfacing — a lump in the throat, sometimes tears that bring relief, not distress
  • Deep drowsiness — many people drift into a state between sleep and waking, and some simply sleep
  • Nothing dramatic at all — just forty-five minutes of the deepest quiet you have had in months. This is not a failed session; it is often the most restorative kind.

You do not need to believe in anything, concentrate on anything, or "do" anything. The session works at the body's pace, not the mind's.

Afterwards: gentle, unhurried closing

We end with a few minutes of quiet conversation — what you noticed, what I noticed, and one or two simple practices to carry home: a breathing pattern, a small evening ritual, a way of drinking your morning coffee more slowly. Then some water, and you are done.

Most people describe the rest of the day with the same words: light, calm, slept like a child. Occasionally the body continues processing for a day — mild tiredness or vivid dreams — which settles on its own. Keep the evening easy if you can.

The practical bits

  • Time: plan for about an hour
  • Wear: anything comfortable; you stay fully clothed
  • Before: avoid a heavy meal just before; arrive as you are
  • Where: in person at your location around Coimbatore, or online — Reiki transmits well remotely
  • Language: Tamil or English, whichever feels like home
Reiki supports your wellbeing alongside medical care — it never replaces the advice or treatment of doctors and mental-health professionals. If you are under treatment, continue it.
